Medical social work patient needs may include:
  • Home care services
  • Financial or insurance concerns
  • Transfer to a rehabilitation or extended care facility
  • Supportive counseling
  • Medical equipment
  • Information and referral to community services 
Utilization management

Our utilization management process ensures your medical chart is reviewed throughout your stay at Prisma Health by staff trained to assure that the level of care you receive is appropriate. Medicare, Medicaid, CHAMPUS, most commercial insurance companies and many employers require review of the treatment given to patients they insure.

In some cases, a patient's chart may be fully reviewed by a representative of a committee of doctors in consultation with the patient's private physician. In cases where the review process determines that the level of care exceeds the patient's needs, patients are notified in writing of this decision and informed of their financial obligations beyond this point. This assures the availability of needed medical resources for other patients and helps control the cost of hospital care.
