Palmetto Health Richland has been recognized as a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility by Baby-Friendly, USA, Inc., the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital initiative. Currently there are 270 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States. Palmetto Health Richland is one of only eight Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility in South Carolina. The “Baby-Friendly” designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed.
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund. The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer optimal care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

We know that by practicing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the moms and babies we care for will have a wonderful beginning together and health benefits that will last the child's lifetime.”
The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding were developed by a team of global experts and consist of evidence-based practices that have been shown to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration. Baby-Friendly hospitals and birthing facilities must adhere to the Ten Steps to receive, and retain, a Baby-Friendly designation.
