Unit designed to provide critical care to patients with serious neurological conditions
Columbia, S.C.– Palmetto Health Richland is opening a 16-bed, Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU). The NSICU will provide the highest level of care to patients who have had a complex neurosurgical procedure, complications from a stroke, traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. It is the Midlands‘ only intensive care unit designed specifically for the care of neuroscience patients. The multidisciplinary unit will be staffed by neurointensivists, physicians trained to treat patients with life-threatening diseases of the nervous system involving the brain, spinal cord and nerves, and specially trained staff who will work closely with physicians to provide around the clock, specialized care to patients.
“The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit provides us with an important tool for the management of neurological illness in our community,” said Roham Moftakhar, M.D., chief of neurosurgery at Palmetto Health Richland and medical director of Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group Neurosurgery. “We understand the differences in treatment that is required for these kinds of patients, and we are glad to fill a gap in medical care that exists in our community. We have the facilities and expertise to ensure the patients receive the best care.”
“Research shows that patients cared for in this kind of unit benefit from better outcomes,” Souvik Sen, M.D., chair of the Department of Neurology for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, said. “Neuroscience Intensive Care Units have been associated with lower mortality and shorter hospital stays for patients who need this specialized care. It is a major development for the Midlands and will go a long way in the development of the Comprehensive Stroke Center that serves our community.”
A patient may be admitted to the NSICU for any neurological condition that requires critical care, such as:
