EVENT: Children and Health Care Week
WHEN: Monday, Sept. 25-Friday, Sept. 29
TIME: 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
WHERE: Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Richland Medical Park Dr., Atrium
FACTS: More than 1,200 Midlands first-graders will get a hands-on learning experience in a unique “mini hospital” setting at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. The tour explores the hospital from a child’s point of view and provides an environment conducive to learning. The goal is to expose children to the hospital environment at a young age, to help alleviate fears and anxieties, should they have a future hospital encounter.
This event has been so well received in the Midlands that the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital Child Life department sponsors the event each fall and spring to include as many first-graders as possible. The program has been around for more than 30 years and it is estimated that more than 40,000 Midlands children have participated.
Hands-on learning stations staffed by team members from Palmetto Health and Richland County EMS include ambulance tours, surgery station, pharmacy station, X-ray station, rehab station and children’s emergency department and patient room tours. EdVenture will provide a presentation before the children split into groups to tour the stations.
In addition to team members, USC Dance Marathon and nursing students assist by escorting students to each of the stations.
“The purpose of Children and Health Care Week is to educate children and help normalize the hospital environment so it isn’t seen as scary,” said Becca Kelly, Child Life supervisor and music therapist. “Every year, there are children who participate in this field trip and later are admitted to Children’s Hospital because of an illness or injury. The children whose first encounter with our hospital was through Children and Health Care Week are always the bravest and most excited because they feel empowered. They know what is going on and feel more a part of the process.”
