Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Buckle Buddies offer tips and car seat safety checks at health fair on March 29
In South Carolina, four out of five car seats are installed or used improperly, increasing the risk of injury to children. “In the most recent quarter, we checked 209 car seats. The majority of those had something wrong. People don’t realize that car seats need to be checked and must be installed properly to protect children,” said Buckle Buddies coordinator Kevin Poore.
“Most parents try to do what seems right to them, but it may not be correct or safe. It is best to have an expert check your child’s car seat,” said Poore. Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Buckle Buddies provide free car seat safety classes and car seat check events.
Poore looks forward to Buckle Buddies participating in an upcoming bilingual Spring Health Fair Wednesday, March 29, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Pineview Baptist Church, 3010 Leaphart Rd., West Columbia. “This is an opportunity to educate Latino families about the importance of using the correct car safety seat for the child as well as demonstrating how to properly install the car seat in the vehicle,” said Poore.
The Spring Health Fair is presented by PASOs, an organization dedicated to helping the Latino community and service providers work together for strong and healthy families. “We do this through education, support and connecting families with resources in the community,” said Ana Cossio, PASOs Midlands program coordinator.
In addition to car seat safety checks, the Spring Health Fair offers exams including:
“We recognize that teaching parents how to correctly use and install car safety seats can save lives,” said Cossio. “We are so grateful to partner with Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Buckle Buddies to educate families and we anticipate a large attendance at the Spring Health Fair.”
