Valvular Heart Disease

Strengthening hearts with advanced valve replacements

At Prisma Health, we provide the most comprehensive evaluation and treatment options available for individuals with heart valve issues.

Improving lives

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure. Learn about TAVR and how it’s changed the lives of two of our patients.

Our experienced, interdisciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and a valve coordinator help patients learn about their heart valve-related disorders, be evaluated for interventions and have in-depth discussions regarding treatment options.

Candidates for our care may have a variety of heart valve issues, including congenital defects, aging issues or even untreated infections. Some people may have no symptoms initially if the valve disorder is mild. As a valve disorder progresses, depending on the type present, the following symptoms may occur:

  • Chest pains
  • Irregular heartbeats or racing heartbeats
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath, especially with activity
  • Fainting spells

The latest procedure that allows replacement of a diseased aortic heart valve without open-heart surgery is Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

Prisma Health Valve Center is the region’s leader in employing the latest technologies and procedures related to TAVR. We were first in the Midlands to deploy CoreValve® and first to use the subclavian as an approach. We now offer valve-in-valve as another option for failed previous valves. We were first in the state of South Carolina to implant the CoreValve® Evolut® R system – the first recapturable, repositionable and self-expanding transcatheter heart valve available in the United States.
